About the Festival:

Created in 1998, the Pacific Playwrights Festival has grown into one of the leading festivals of new plays in the country and showcases some of the best new work on SCR’s radar. The festival offerings generate lively conversation, future world premieres and subsequent productions for numerous playwrights. Of the 131 plays presented in the first 20 years of PPF, nearly all have gone on to productions at SCR and/or other theatres nationwide.

Irons in the fire

I’ve been in a long six-month period of development with many projects. Here’s what I’ve been up to.

-an original TV pilot that puts a revisionist supernatural spin on the California Gold Rush

-an adaptation of a sci-fi book into a feature

-a new play called SHEEPDOG (just finished) about a police officer shooting

To write this play I’ve been talking with police officers – primarily officers of color – conducting interviews and diving deep into the complex issue of police violence in this country. I’ve been truly fortunate to speak with Officer Nakia Jones, whose brave testimony after the Alton Sterling shooting struck a chord with me and millions across the country.

A sad situation. The murder of journalists is on the rise. NY Times article here.

Mexico is one of the worst countries in the world to be a journalist today. At least 104 journalists have been murdered in this country since 2000, while 25 others have disappeared, presumed dead. On the list of the world’s deadliest places to be a reporter, Mexico falls between the war-torn nation of Afghanistan and the failed state of Somalia. Last year, 11 Mexican journalists were killed, the country’s highest tally this century.

Congrats to Golden Thread!

“Golden Thread receives 9 Bay Area Theatre Critics’ Circle Award nominations, including Best Entire Production for both ‘The Most Dangerous Highway in the World’ and ‘Our Enemies.’ We are so happy that the work of our amazing artists are being recognized. We are especially proud of Kiran Patel, the then-13-year-old lead of ‘Highway’, who received a nod in the Best Actor category!”

Opening night! So much love and care has been poured into this production. Thank you to Torange Yeghiazarian, Evren Odcikin, and all the staff at Golden Thread for putting their faith in me, asking all the right questions and supporting me over the years. To all my friends whose hands, eyes, and minds have graced this play and guided it along, you know who you are, and I thank you (this includes the National New Play Network, Playwrights Foundation, and all my friends at The Public.)
